Griffins lose in OT

Westminster was out shot 13-to-3 in OT by the Mountaineers.

GUNNISON, Colo.--The Westminster men's basketball team (5-1, 1-1 RMAC) lost its first game of the season at Western State (3-5, 1-1 RMAC).  The Mountaineers outscored the Griffins, 13-3 in overtime, to win, 79-69. 
 
The Griffins overcame an eight-point lead from the first half and took the lead from the Mountaineers a few minutes into the second half.  Western State got the lead back and was close to winning until a basket by Tanner Newbold tied the game with nine seconds remaining to force overtime.    The Mavericks shot 75.0 percent from the field and hit 2-of-3 3-pointers to win the game 79-69.
 
Zach Scott scored the first points of the game and give Westminster the lead.  Seconds later Western State then scored a 3-pointer for the lead and went on to score nine more points for a 7-point lead.  With 3:47 remaining, Westminster cut the lead down to one through a Tanner Newbold 3-pointer.
 
Dayon Goodman, Quincy Bair and Sam Orchard scored 12 unanswered points to start the second half and take a six-point lead, 38-44.    The Griffins held on to the lead until five minutes left in the second half.  Newbold hit a jumper with nine seconds remaining to tie the game, 66-66.
 
A foul called on Sam Orchard sent Western State's Christian West to the free-throw line with three seconds remaining.  The game went to overtime after both chances were missed.
 
Westminster shot 14.3 percent in overtime as the Mointaineers went on to win, 79-69.
 
Westminster shot 43.5 percent (27-of-62) from the field, 25.0 percent (3-of-12) from 3-point range, and 75.0 percent (12-of-16) from the free-throw line.  Goodman scored 35 points to lead the team in scoring.  Newbold scored 12 points and was the only other Griffin to score in double-digits.
 
Bair led the team in rebounds, pulling down six.  Jarred Laws and Newbold each had five rebounds and Mason Smith had four rebounds.
 
Westminster's next game is at home against CSU-Pueblo on Friday and New Mexico Highlands on Saturday.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Behnken Fieldhouse.  Tickets will be available for purchase online in advance or at the door before the game.  The games will be broadcast on the RMAC Network and available on live stats.
