Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Westminster falls to Dixie State in come from behind victory

A shot in the last seconds seals win for Trailblazers

ST. GEORGE: Dixie State's Taylor Moekai hit a 13-foot jumper with 4.3 seconds to play to lift Dixie State to a 64-62 come-from-behind victory over the Griffins.  The win moves the Trailblazers to 4-2 on the season and the Griffins drop to 1-3.

Westminster began the game with a 16-5 run on their way to a 24-18 lead after first quarter of play. Dixie State would outscore the Griffins 33-20 over the next two quarters with Westminster shooting 30.7 percent (8-of-26) shooting with a score of 51-44 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Griffins responded with a 12-2 run to regain the lead at 54-53 following a Denise Gonzalez trey with 7:21 to play.

DSU trailed 59-58 with 1:29 remaining with a chance to reclaim the lead at the foul line, but the Trailblazers could not convert . The home team managed to battle inside to clear the rebound and lay-in the go-ahead bucket to put DSU up a point at 60-59.

Westminster would regain the lead on its ensuing possession on a Sydnee Taylor 3-pointer, but the Trailblazers would answer on the next trip down the court with a jumper to tie the score at 62-62. The Trailblazers then got a defensive stop to regain possession with a chance to win it in regulation.

Following a DSU timeout, the Trailblazers Moeaki pulled up for a shot from the left elbow and the go-ahead jumper to put the home team up by two. Westminster had one more shot to tie or take the lead, but Taylor's try bounced off the rim and DSU pulled down the board to secure the win.

Westminster shot 40 percent on 24 of 60 from the floor and 7 of 20 from the three-point line. The Trailblazers outrebounded the Griffins 47-31.  Denise Gonzalez led all scorers with 15 points, while Taylor added 13 points with seven assists and four steals.

Westminster will now head into conference play as they travel to Grand Junction, Colorado to face Colorado Mesa Thursday, November 30th at 5:30 pm.  Saturday the Griffins complete their two-game RMAC road trip with a 5:00 p.m. tip-off at Western State Colorado.  Both contests will air live on the RMAC Network and will include live stats.
