Men's soccer defeats Metro State in overtime

Danny Darelli scores game winner in overtime

DENVER, Colo. -- Westminster College men's soccer (6-10-1, 4-8-1 RMAC) played their second to last game of the 2017 season against Metropolitan State University of Denver (8-9-0, 8-5-0 RMAC).  The Griffins scored in overtime to defeat the Roadunners 2-1.

The Roadrunners struck first and scored off of a cross in the 23rd minute against the run of play.  The Griffins went to the locker room trailing 1-0 even though they out shot their opponent nine to five.

The Griffins started the second half quick and scored the equalizer in the 50th minute.  Junior Hunter Kone headed a cross from freshman Amit Hefer into the top right corner of the goal.  The second half was a little more balanced as the Griffins took six shots and the Roadrunners took seven.  Both teams prepared for overtime as the half ended 1-1.

The Griffins scored the game winner without allowing a shot by the home team.  In the 96th minute, a through ball from Amit Hefer found sophomore Danny Darelli 1v1 with the goalkeeper.  Darelli touched the ball around the keeper and passed the ball into an open goal.

Amit Hefer added two assists and leads the team with seven.  Both Kone and Darelli added to their season goal total.  Darelli leads the team with six goals and Kone is close behind with five.  Junior goalkeeper Max Medley made three saves for the Griffins.

The Griffins will finish the season at Colorado Christian University.  The game is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 1:30 PM.  The game will be broadcast on the RMAC Network and can be followed on live stats.
