LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- Westminster College's men's soccer team wrapped up the 2017 season on the road against the Cougars of Colorado Christian Univeristy (1-14-3, 1-11-2 RMAC). The Griffins scored two goals to defeat the Cougars 2-0 and finish the season with it's third straight win and a record of 7-10-1 overall and 5-8-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
The Griffins held an offensive edge in the first half outshooting the home team 11 to 6 and forcing the CCU goalkeeper to make two saves. The Griffins also had 10 corner kicks to their opponents two. CCU fouled the Griffins 13 times. The half ended without any goals, 0-0.
The game flipped in the second half as the Cougars outshot the Griffins 14 to eight. Senior
Jonnathan Rodriguez controled a ball at the penalty mark but missed high and junior
Hunter Kone found himself in the penalty box with a promising chance but missed wide right. In the 61st minute senior goalkeeper
Sean Speirs was called into action and made the required save to keep the game tied.
The Griffins broke the stalemate In the 66th and 70th minute. Freshman
Amit Hefer shot from the right side of the box and scored down the middle of the goal for his fifth goal of the season. Kone scored his sixth goal of the season after he got in behind the defense on a through ball and scored at the near post in the upper corner. The Griffin defense was strong and turned away nine shots in the final 20 minutes to win, 2-0.
Hefer, with five shots-three on target-and Kone, with six shots-three on target-scored both goals for the Griffins and were responsible for 11 out of the 19 total shots by the team. The defense faced 20 shots and 20 corners and only allowed one shot on target-saved by keeper Speirs-to earn their second shutout of the year.
The Griffins finished the 2017 season in 7th place with 16 points, only two points behind Regis. The Griffins earned seven points more and finished one place higher than the 2016 season.
