NAMPA, Idaho – The Westminster men's soccer team overcame a first half deficit and defeated Hawaii Hilo, 2-1, in overtime on Thursday afternoon at the NNU Soccer Field.
Â
Westminster (1-1) trailed 1-0 at halftime after Jonathan Garcia scored from just inside the penalty area to give Hawaii Hilo (0-1) the lead in the 41st minute.
Â
That lead would hold to the 59th minute when the Griffins got the equalizer from
Cristian Alfaro. After Westminster played the ball in on a corner kick, the Hawaii Hilo clearance came to Alfaro for a shot from 20 yards away for his first career goal.
Â
Neither team would break through over the final 31 minutes of regulation, but just 47 seconds into the overtime period the Griffins found a winner.
Jonnathan Rodriguez would carry the ball down the left side and put a centering ball to
Hunter Kone. That is where Kone put his shot past the Vulcans keeper for the win.
Â
It was the first time that Westminster had won a game in which they trailed since the 2013 season. They also snapped a stretch of 14 consecutive games without scoring multiple goals in an outing.
Â
The Griffins attempted 13 shots in the game and they put six of those on goal. Hawaii Hilo got 12 shots with four on frame.
Â
Max Medley earned his first career win in goal with three saves.
Â
Westminster will complete the trip to Idaho on Saturday when they face Northwest Nazarene at 5:30 p.m. Live video and stats of the game will be available at WestminsterGriffins.com.
