GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Westminster men's soccer team saw its season open with a 3-1 loss to Eastern New Mexico on Saturday afternoon at Walker Field.
Playing under new head coach
Josh Pittman, Westminster fell behind in the 15th minute and never recovered. Eastern New Mexico (1-0-1) made it 2-0 minutes later and then the game was delayed nearly 60 minutes due to lightning in the area.
The Griffins would show some life after the delay and into the second half when
Preston McIllece scored his first career goal to trim the deficit to 2-1.
Cristian Alfaro played the on a free kick where McIllece got a deflection for the Griffins lone tally.
ENMU added an insurance goal in the 88th minute for the final margin.
Westminster was outshot in the game 11-3 with two of their attempts on goal. They took three corner kicks and surrendered four.
Max Medley took the result in goal for the Griffins with three saves in his Westminster debut.
The Griffins will remain on the road next weekend with a trip to Nampa, Idaho for two games. That trip begins on Thursday against Hawaii Hilo in a neutral site game hosted by Northwest Nazarene.
