Griffins Lose Late at CSU-Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Westminster women's lacrosse team rallied from a late deficit to tie the game and then surrender a goal with 20 seconds to play in a 14-13 loss at CSU-Pueblo on Saturday afternoon in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
 
Westminster (2-5, 2-3 RMAC) trailed by five in the second half and was behind 13-9 with 8:52 to play. The Griffins then ran off four straight goals and when Madison Ingman scored with 1:18 to play it was a 13-13 game.
 
After winning the following draw control, Westminster committed a turnover and they forced a turnover to get possession back. Hanna Lukes had her shot blocked with 40 seconds to play. CSU-Pueblo (6-3, 1-0) picked up the ground ball and then Chloe Sharko scored in transition for the win with 20 seconds on the clock.
 
The loss put a damper on a six goal and two assist performance from Katie Adams. The sophomore set a career high for goals in a game on eight shots. She was 2 of 3 on free-position attempts and had four draw controls.
 
Westminster had a 34-32 edge in shot attempts with 24 of those chances on cage. CSU-Pueblo finished the game with a 22-17 advantage in ground balls and took 16 of 28 draw controls. The Griffins were only 9 of 15 in clearing attempts and committed 21 turnovers.
 
Ingman added three goals for the Griffins while Daisy Mele and Kira Heiden scored two goals apiece. Taylor Hekking suffered the loss in goal with eight saves.
 
CSU-Pueblo got four goals from Alex Zierden and three each from Allison Wurscher and Leah Neumann.
 
The Griffins will return to action on Sunday when they face Fort Lewis at 1 p.m. in Durango, Colo.
