Griffins Fall to Mavericks in Season Finale

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – After leading 32-29 at halftime, the Westminster men's basketball team got blitzed by Colorado Mesa in the first nine minutes of the second half and lost 85-63 in the season finale at Brownson Arena.
 
Westminster (14-12, 10-12 RMAC) got outscored 32-5 in an 8:36 span that saw Colorado Mesa (20-8, 16-6) make 10 of 12 shots and force the Griffins into six turnovers. The Mavericks would outscore Westminster 56-31 in the second half and held them to just 10 baskets in the period.
 
Jordan Pryor gave the Griffins 17 points in his final collegiate game. He made 6 of 10 shots and was 4 of 6 from beyond the arc. Pryor finishes his career as the 12th-best scorer in team history with 967 career points.
 
The Griffins had opened a 12-point lead with 7:24 remaining in the first half by holding the Mavericks to a 5 of 15 start. Pryor scored 13 points during that time as the Griffins made five of their first seven attempts from three.
 
CMU was able to cut the halftime deficit to three after getting 14 points combined from Ryan Stephan and CJ Davis in the final seven minutes of the half. Stephan, the RMAC's leading scorer, would then get 12 points in the first eight minutes of the second half as he finished with 22.
 
Westminster shot 40 percent from the field on the night, but they committed 16 turnovers which resulted in 22 points for the home team. CMU shot 48.1 percent and had 36 points in the paint to just 18 from the Griffins.
 
Zerrion Payton added 16 points for the Griffins to go with four rebounds and two assists. Kenny Woodard finished his collegiate career with 10 points and three assists.
 
This game completes Westminster's first season in the RMAC and they finished tied for ninth in the final standings.
