PROVO, Utah – The Westminster women's basketball team dropped an exhibition game at Brigham Young, 77-59, on Wednesday night at the Marriott Center.
BYU opened the game on a 23-9 run and maintained a double-digit advantage the rest of the night. After trailing 41-24 at halftime, Westminster played the NCAA Division I Cougars within one point in the second half.
The Griffins shot just 35.5 percent from the field and made just 8 of 27 from beyond the arc. They were beat on the glass 44-28 and committed 17 turnovers. Westminster held BYU to 2 of 9 from three and forced 18 Cougar turnovers which resulted in 20 Westminster points.
Sydnee Taylor led the way for the Griffins with 13 points. She hit 5 of 11 shots and was 3 of 6 from beyond the arc.
Denise Gonzalez and
Sicilee Williams scored nine points apiece in defeat.
Westminster assisted on 14 of their 22 baskets and got four assists from Gonzalez and three from
Aubrie Vale.
Whitni Syrett led the team with seven rebounds.
Cassie Broadhead, Kristine Nielson, and Klani Purcell scored 11 points each to led the Cougars.
Westminster will play a second exhibition game on November 11 at Utah State before their season opener at Northwest Nazarene on November 12.
