LOGAN, Utah – The Westminster women's basketball team was defeated by Utah State, 72-49, on Friday morning at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. The game was an exhibition game for the Griffins, but counts for Utah State.
Westminster had the game tied at 10-10 midway through the first quarter before the Aggies closed the quarter on a 14-4 run. The advantage continued into the second quarter that saw USU outscore the Griffins 15-5. The lead stayed above 17 for the entire second half as the home team secured its first win of the season.
The Griffins never found an offensive rebound as they made just 19 field goals and shot 38.8 percent. They scored seven of those makes from beyond the arc where they finished at 33.3 percent. They Griffins had 12 assists and 22 turnovers which the Aggies turned into 20 points.
Utah State shot 39.2 percent in the game and they grabbed 26 offensive rebounds to help them finish with a 49-29 edge in total boards.
Denise Gonzalez scored a team-high 12 points for the Griffins. She also tallied four assists and three rebounds.
Sydnee Taylor added 11 points on 4 of 7 shooting while grabbing six rebounds.
Aubrie Vale had nine points and nine rebounds with
Whitni Syrett adding nine points.
Utah State had three players score in double figures and they were led by the 14 from Shannon Dufficy.
Westminster now travels to Nampa, Idaho, where they will face Northwest Nazarene on Saturday in the regular season opener. Tipoff for the game is slated for 5 p.m. with live video available at
