SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster men's soccer team had an early lead before Colorado School of Mines pulled away to take a 4-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at Dumke Field in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
Â
Westminster (3-8, 2-6 RMAC) took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute as
Jaden Olsen created some space and fired a shot under the upper right corner from the top of the penalty area for his second goal of the season.
Â
The Griffins would hold that lead into the 26th minute when Colorado Mines (6-4-2, 5-2-1) drew even when a corner kick from Nikolaus Grotz sailed through the scrum in the area and into the goal. The Orediggers would take the lead in the 30th minute as Ashi Geberkidane headed in a through ball from Bryce Townsend.
Â
The visitors would strike twice in the second half just four minute apart. John Haist headed home a ball played by Grotz on the 55th minute and then Trevor Amann scored on a give-and-go with Haist in the 59th minute.
Â
Westminster finished the game with 11 shots, but they were only able to get one shot away in the second half. The Griffins put seven of those attempts on goal. Mines attempted 20 shots with 12 on goals and they had a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
Â
Olsen and
Cristian Alfaro led the Griffins with two shots apiece. Seven different Griffins had a shot on goal.
Â
Max Medley matched a career high with seven saves in defeat.
Â
The Griffins have two games on the road next week, including a contest at Colorado Mesa on Wednesday at 5 p.m. That game will be broadcast live on the
RMAC Network.
