Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Overtime Kind to Griffins in 3-2 Win

SALT LAKE CITY – For the second time this season the Westminster men's soccer team came out victorious in an overtime contest. On Friday, it was a 3-2 win against Colorado Christian in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play at Dumke Field.
 
It was a great start for the home side as Connor Thompson put Westminster (3-7, 2-5 RMAC) in front with his second goal of the season in the seventh minute. Jaden Olsen played a ball through the Colorado Christian (1-10, 1-6) defense to a streaking Thompson who finished from 10 yards out.
 
The visitors would pull even in the 36th minute as Blake Goodale tallied his fourth goal of the season when he headed home a feed from Jack McCunn. The Cougars would then take the lead I nthe 70th minute as John Alderman chipped s hot over the Westminster keeper after a through ball from Sebastian Roeder.
 
The Griffins were able to find an equalizer in the 80th minute as Cristian Alfaro played a ball to Danny Darelli to the top of the penalty area. Darelli took one touch and put a shot inside the left post for his first career goal.
 
Neither team was able to find a winner in regulation, but in the fourth minute of extra time the Griffins secured their first home win of the season. Following a CCU foul just outside the area, Alfaro stepped up and slid a shot around the wall and inside the far post for his third goal of the season.
 
The win marked the second time this season the Griffins have rallied from a deficit to win a game in overtime. They entered the year having not rallied for a win since the 2013 season.
 
It took 19 shots ion Friday to get the win and the Griffins put nine of those chances on goal. They held CCU to nine shots – four on goal – and held an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.
 
Alfaro took six of the team's shots with two on goal. Thompson had four shots with three on frame while Olsen put both of his chances on goal.
 
Max Medley earned his third win of the season in goal for the Griffins with two saves.
 
Westminster will return to action on Sunday when they host Colorado School of Mines. The game from Dumke Field will begin at 1 p.m. with tickets available at WestminsterGriffins.com/tickets.
