SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster had a lead late in the fourth quarter before falling to Colorado State University – Pueblo, 66-62, on Saturday night in the Behnken Field House.
Looking for consecutive conference wins for the first time this season, Westminster (7-12, 4-11 RMAC) used an 11-2 run to take a 57-54 lead with 6:57 to play. They had the advantage back to three on a jumper from
Denise Gonzalez with 2:53 on the clock.
CSU-Pueblo (17-4, 12-3) would close the game with an 8-1 burst the spoil the Griffins upset bid.
Natalie Parsons got a potential game-tying 3-pointer away with eight seconds to play, but it was short and the rebound was secured by the visitors.
Mika Pinner led the Griffins with 13 points in defeat. The senior also collected four rebounds and had a pair of blocked shots.
Westminster finished the night shooting 41.3 percent from the floor and they grabbed 13 offensive rebounds to finish with a 42-37 advantage in total rebounds. The Griffins had a 40-13 edge in points in the paint and they held the ThunderWolves to 35.4 percent shooting.
Denise Gonzalez added 12 points and four assists for the Griffins.
Jessica Sorensen recorded 11 points and nine rebounds and
Aubrie Vale scored 11.
CSU-Pueblo took advantage of 13 offensive rebounds for 14 second chance points. Molly Rohrer led the visitors with 18 points. Dee Arrieta added 16 and six boards.
The Griffins will play their next four games on the road over two weekends. The tough stretch begin on Friday when they face New Mexico Highlands at 5 p.m. MT in Las Vegas, N.M. All four road games will be carried on Griffins TV.
