LAIE, Hawaii – It was a familiar feel for the Westminster women's soccer team as
Rylei North scored in the 23rd minute to help the Griffins claim a 1-0 win at BYU-Hawaii on Saturday afternoon at the BYUH Soccer Field.
North, the Westminster (2-0) all-time leader in goals scored, tallied her first goal of the new season when she found a loose ball in the box and put in the goal. The goal came on one of just two first-half shots by the Griffins with both on target.
"This was a grind out win and the team showed that we can hold off a tough opponent," Westminster head coach
Tony LeBlanc said after the game.
Abi Yanke preserved the win for Westminster with four saves. She had to make three stops in the final 13 minutes, including one with just under three minutes to play. Yake earned her second win of the season and first shutout. She now had 17 shutouts in her career, one shy of the school record.
BYU-Hawaii (0-1) finished the contest with an 8-5 edge in shot attempts and the home side had four corner kicks to just two by the Griffins. North led Westminster with three of those attempts with
Heidi Lorschider taking the other two.
Westminster completes the trip to Hawaii on Monday when they play at Chaminade at 6 p.m. MT.
