SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's soccer team waited out the weather and then earned its second consecutive shutout with a 2-0 win over MSU Denver in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at Dumke Field on Friday afternoon.
The start of the game was delayed over an hour because of lighting and hail in the area.
Once the action got underway it was MSU Denver (4-3-2, 1-2-2 RMAC) that had the early chances with three shots in the first 20 minutes. Westminster (6-3, 3-3) would turn the tide in the 26th minute following a foul by the visitors down the right sideline.
Korral Koehler took the ensuing free kick and played the ball to the top of the six-yard box where
Rylei North headed it home for her fifth goal of the season.
Each team had chances turned away in the final 20 minutes of the half and the game hit the intermission with that 1-0 score line. The Griffins added an insurance goal in the 58th minute when Koehler created another chance. The senior played a cross into the penalty area where
Madison Roemer headed it home for her second goal of the year.
The two assists for Koehler give her three on the season and she records the team's first multi-assist game since September 28, 2014.
Westminster finished the game with a 9-8 advantage in shots and they were able to get five attempts on goal to only three from the Roadrunners. The home side took five corner kicks and surrendered only two.
Abi Yanke secured the victory in goal and became the Westminster all-time leader with her 19th career shutout. She made three saves and extended her personal shutout streak to 193 consecutive minutes.
The Griffins will look to sweep this current three-game home stand on Sunday when they host Regis University. Action is scheduled to begin at noon at Dumke Field with tickets available at
