WAIPIO, Hawaii – It took the first career goal from
Megan Molumby in the 107th minute, but the Westminster women's soccer team opened the new season with a 2-1 win over Hawaii Pacific on a soggy Waipio Soccer park field on Thursday night.
"This was a great comeback performance from the team today in less than ideal conditions," Westminster head coach
Tony LeBlanc said after the win.
Hawaii Pacific (0-1) took the lead in the 22nd minute when Erika Ellis headed a ball off the crossbar and in for the early 1-0 lead. The game stayed that way through the end of the first half as the conditions continued to worsen with rain falling throughout the day.
The Griffins (1-0) would find an equalizer in the 72nd minute when
Madeline Orr put a shot inside the left post from just inside the penalty area. It was the first career goal for the senior and was enough to send the game into overtime.
After the home side had a pair of shots in the first 10-minute overtime session the game moved into a second extra period still level. Molumby would strike in the seventh minute of that session when a failed clearance found her foot at the top of the box. The senior buried the shot from there to tally the game-winner on just her 10th career shot.
"It was good to get this first win after the way we dominated after halftime," LeBlanc added. "That goal from Molumby is one of the best goals I've seen us score in a long time."
Hawaii Pacific finished the contest with a 12-8 edge in total shots. Westminster put three of their attempts on cage, scoring twice, and they took three corner kicks.
Madison Roemer led the team with three shots.
Abi Yanke secured her 24th career win in goal by making five saves.
The Griffins will continue the trip to Hawaii on Saturday when they face Brigham Young-Hawaii at 4:30 p.m. MT.
