Defense Shines in 55-37 Win at Rocky

BILLINGS, Mont. – The No. 4 Westminster women's basketball team won their seventh straight game with a 55-37 win at Rocky Mountain (Mont.) in Frontier Conference play at the Fortin Center on Thursday night.
 
Westminster (17-2, 7-1 Frontier) trailed 17-12 a little less than eight minutes into the game before closing the half with an 11-0 run to lead 23-17 at intermission. Rocky Mountain (9-10, 2-6) cut the deficit to three on two occasions in the first half minutes of the second half only to see the Griffins score 16 straight points in a seven minute span to lead 43-24 with 8:00 remaining.
 
The Griffins held Rocky to just 12 baskets in the game – six in each half – and limited them to 25.5 percent shooting. The offense had a tough first half shooting the ball at 31 percent, but the connected on 42.9 percent after the break to finish the game shooting 36.8 percent. The Griffins made eight threes on 21 attempts (38.1 percent) and held a 42-40 edge on the glass.
 
Amy Krommenhoek led all scorers in the game with 14 points with four treys on her eight attempts. She also led the way with four of the team's 10 steals. Shelby Ellsworth, Tia Pappas, and Alli Winters all scored eight points apiece and Pappas grabbed a team-best nine rebounds (five offensive).
 
Eight players in total scored for Westminster and they got 15 points from the bench with Mika Pinner leading that group with eight. Pinner also blocked two shots and grabbed six rebounds.
 
Jayde Lefevre and Whitney Mitchell led Rocky with eight points apiece. The Battlin' Bears forced 16 Griffin turnovers and blocked four shots.
 
Westminster will now travel to Helena, Mont. where they face No. 17 Carroll (Mont.) on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. MT. The Griffins will look to even the season series with Carroll after the Saints defeated the Griffins in Salt Lake City last month.
