DURANGO, Colo. – The Westminster women's basketball team earned its first win of the season with a dominating 66-28 win over Adams State on Saturday afternoon at the Skyhawks Regional Challenge.
The 28 points allowed by Westminster (1-1) are tied for the fewest ever given up in a game in team history. They held Adams State (0-2) to just 14.8 percent shooting and only allowed 16 points in the final three quarters. The Griffins forced 16 turnovers and held ASU to 0 for 12 from beyond the arc in the second half.
Natalie Parsons made 5 of 7 from three and scored 21 points to lead the Griffins. She also controlled 10 rebounds to notch her first double-double of the year. Parsons was 6 of 11 overall and recorded two steals in the win.
As a team, Westminster shot 39.1 percent from the field and made nine of their 23 attempts (39.1 percent) from distance. They had 15 assists on 18 field goals and grabbed 43 rebounds with 15 points coming from 13 offensive boards.
Denise Gonazlez added 13 points and six assists for the Griffins.
Riley Reidhead scored nine points off the bench and
Mika Pinner notched three blocked shots.
Adams State was led by nine points from Cydney McHenry. The Grizzlies had 24 offensive rebounds, but only scored 10 points from them.
Westminster will be back in action on Monday when they face Utah State in an exhibition game for the Griffins in Logan, Utah, at 7 p.m. MT.
