Griffins Tie Western State with Late Penalty Kick

GUNNISON, Colo. – The Westminster women's soccer team put their first game in the tie column Friday evening with a 2-2 draw versus the Mountaineers of Western State Colorado University.

The two teams remained scoreless until the 43 minute when Westminster's Madeline Orr sent one in from 35 yards out. The Griffins (6-4-1, 3-3-1 RMAC) held Western State scoreless the rest of the half.

Western State (5-5-2, 2-4-1) opened the second half with a goal from Elyza Montano on an assist from Tanisha Anderson in the 59th minute. Western State found the net again with just 12 seconds remaining in regulation.

The game was stopped with one second on the clock following a red card given to the WSCU goalkeeper and providing the Griffins with penalty kick. Heidi Lorschider stepped up and put it in the back of the net to tie it up 2-2.

Neither team could net a winner through 20 minutes of overtime.

The Griffins finished the night with 10 shots on goal holding the Mustangs to three.

The Griffins continue RMAC play on the road in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Sunday when they play at UC Colorado Springs.
