Griffins Earn First RMAC Point with 1-1 Draw

SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster men's soccer team secured its first point as a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with a hard fought 1-1 draw against Adams State on Sunday afternoon at Dumke Field.

Westminster (1-6-1, 0-5-1 RMAC) took the lead in the 41st minute when Hunter Kone scored his first career goal. Matthew Warne played the ball into the penalty area where Kone took a dribble to the left and then fired a shot on net to give the Griffins the early 1-0 advantage.

That lead would hold through intermission and into the 52nd minute when Aaron Fox found the equalizer for Adams State (1-7-1, 1-3-1). Following a Westminster foul, Caleb Eckenroth played the free kick to Shane Wagner down the right sideline. Wagner then crossed the ball into the area where Fox found it and tapped it in.

Neither team would be able to find a winner through the end of regulation and a pair of 10-minute overtime sessions. Taylor Ruff did his best to make sure the Griffins secured the draw with nine saves, including four in the second overtime session.

The visiting side finished the afternoon with a 15-10 edge in shot attempts and the Griffins got four attempts on goal. Westminster took seven corner kicks while allowing eight and the teams combined to commit 44 fouls and eight cautions.

The Griffins will look to build on this result when they head back to the road for a pair of games next week. They will play at Colorado Mines on Friday at 5 p.m. in Golden, Colo.
