No. 4 Westminster Women Hold Off No. 10 MSU-Northern in Double OT

HAVRE, Mont. – Playing a ranked team for the second straight night, the No. 4 Westminster women's basketball team escaped Armory Gymnasium with a 67-62 double overtime victory at No. 10 Montana State-Northern in Frontier Conference action on Saturday night.

Westminster (14-2, 4-1 Frontier) appeared to have the game locked up in regulation after a Shelby Ellsworth three put them ahead 48-42 with just under one minute to play. That is when MSU-Northern (20-2, 5-1) scored six straight points and forced overtime when Megan Feldman made a layup with 1.9 seconds on the clock.

Alli Winters made a pair of threes in the first two minutes of the first overtime that had the Griffins in front 57-53. The Sky Lights used a three from Taylor Cummings and a pair of free throws by Ajha Edwards to knot the game at 58-58 after the first five extra minutes.

Winters would open the second overtime with four straight points and then Tia Pappas connected on a three to put Westminster in front by seven with 2:18 to play. Northern would cut the deficit to three before Amy Krommenhoek sealed the win with two free throws with 15.8 seconds to play.

The Griffins finished the game shooting 43.1 percent from the field and they connected on 9-of-19 (47.4 percent) from beyond the arc. They held a slim 37-34 edge on the boards while forcing the home squad into 19 turnovers.

Winters led four Griffins in double figures by matching her career-high of 21 points. She went 7-of-11 from the floor and made four of her five attempts from beyond the arc. Pappas notched her third double-double of the season with 15 points and a season-high 13 rebounds. Ellsworth added 13 points and Krommenhoek had 10.

MSU-Northern got 19 points and 16 rebounds from Edwards and 12 points and four assists by Cummings. Feldman and Natalee Faupel added 10 points apiece.

The Griffins will spend next weekend at home for a pair of games to complete the first half of the conference season. They begin the week against Montana Tech on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. MT in the Behnken Field House. Tickets for that game and all remaining home games are available at WestminsterGriffins.com/tickets.
