SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's soccer team peppered the net throughout the afternoon on Sunday, but they had to settle for a 1-1 draw against College of Idaho in the final game of the Westminster Fall Classic at Dumke Field.
Westminster (4-0-1) saw its shutout streak come to an end in the fourth minute when Jessica Whitehead won a sprint down the sideline to gain possession of the ball. She then blasted a shot that deflected off a Griffin defender and into the net to give College of Idaho (3-1-1) the early lead.
That lead would remain into halftime despite the Griffins holding a 10-1 edge in shots during the opening 45 minutes. It wouldn't be until the 69th minute that Westminster would get on the board.
Abbey Mann carried the ball down the right sideline and sent a cross into the area. A College of Idaho defender headed the cross into her own net trying to clear for the own goal and leveling the game at 1-1.
The Griffins would see a chance to take the lead in the 80th minute turned away when the Yotes keeper, Brittany Hougton, saved a penally kick from
Nicole Carter. Westminster would create a few other chances down the stretch and through two 10-minute overtime periods, but they were unable to find a winner.
Westminster finished the afternoon with a 26-3 edge in shot attempts and they were able to get 13 of those chances on frame. They also took seven corner kicks to just three from the Yotes.
Lexi Tucker led all players with seven shot attempts (two on goal) and
Rylei North got off six shots (four on goal).
Abi Yanke made one save in goal to earn the draw.
The Griffins will remain home next week for a pair of games. The first of those come on Friday at 4:30 p.m. MT when they welcome Northwestern (Iowa) to Dumke Field.
