Spring Arbor Snaps Griffins Unbeaten Streak with 2-1 Win

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Westminster women's soccer team saw its school record 14-game unbeaten streak come to an end with a 2-1 loss at No. 14 Spring Arbor (Mich.) on Monday afternoon at the Cougar Soccer Complex.

Westminster (8-1-1) hadn't lost a game since Oct. 20 of last season was tied the nation's 14th-ranked team, 0-0, at halftime. It took until the 77th minute for either team to get on the board. That is when Spring Arbor (6-1-1) took the lead when Kailyn Wegenke converted on a corner kick. Sarah Klunder played the ball into the penalty area when Westminster keeper Abi Yanke pushed the ball away from net. It came down at the foot of Wegenke who then put a shot in the goal for her first goal of the season.

Just over four minutes later it was the Griffins that found the equalizer when Rylei North scored with 8:12 remaining on the clock. It was the team-leading seventh goal of the season for North and the third-straight game the junior ha scored a goal.

Spring Arbor would get the winner in the 86th minute from another corner kick. Klunder again played the ball in where it found Abbey Fuller who proceeded to put her shot past Yanke for her fourth tally of the season and the game-winner.

The goal by North extended the team's record streak of consecutive games with a goal to 19 straight dating back to last season. The three-straight games with a goal by North is tied for the third-longest such streak in team history.

The visiting Griffins finished the afternoon with eight shot attempts and they out four of them on goal. They allowed the Cougars to take 18 shots and the home squad placed 12 of those attempts on goal.

Yanke recorded 10 saves in the game, but was tagged with her first loss of the season.

Westminster will return home where they will play three games this week. The first comes on Thursday when they welcome Antelope Valley (Calif.) to Dumke Field at 4 p.m. MT in the first of consecutive games against the Pioneers.
