SALT LAKE CITY – The 16th-ranked Westminster women's soccer team rebounded from their first loss of the season on Monday by defeating Antelope Valley (Calif.), 5-0, on Thursday evening at Dumke Field.
Westminster (9-1-1) didn't waste any time in taking control of the action as
Madison Roemer gathered a clearing attempt from an Antelope Valley (4-5-1) defender and blasted a shot inside the far post for the 1-0 lead in the eighth minute. It was the third goal of the season for Roemer and the third-fastest goal by the Griffins this season.
Rylei North would push the lead to 2-0 in the 11th minute on her eighth goal of the season. Keeper
Abi Yanke played a ball that bounced off the turf and found North on the run. The junior forward took a couple of touched before sliding a shot past the keeper to tie a school record by scoring a goal in her fourth straight game.
Miranda Olsen struck in the 23rd minute when she took a pass from North and then chipped a shot over the UAV keeper from 20 yards away for her first goal of the season.
Lexi Tucker got in on the action in the 31st minute when she tapped in a through ball by
Heidi Lorschider for her fifth of the year to give the Griffins the 4-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Griffins finished the day's scoring in the 66th minute and
Emily Bergland played a ball to
Nicole Carter who fired a shot for the 5-0 advantage and he second of the season.
Westminster had an 18-6 edge in shots during the contest and they put 13 of those attempts on goal. The Griffins saw 11 different players take at least one shot with North and Tucker each getting four shots away.
Abi Yanke earned her ninth win of the season with two saves during her 64 minutes of action.
Breanna Empey posted three saves in 26 minutes to combine on the shutout with Yanke.
The Griffins and Antelope Valley will play again on Friday when they meet at 4 p.m. MT at Dumke Field.
