DETROIT – The Westminster women's soccer team exploded for a season-high six goals as they opened their three-game road trip with an easy 6-0 victory at Marygrove (Mich.) on Friday afternoon at the Marygrove Soccer Field.
Westminster (7-0-1) scored twice in the game's first 13 minutes en route to a 3-0 lead at halftime.
Rylei North opened the scoring in the seventh minute when she stole a pass from the Marygrove (0-6) keeper and the scored from the top of the penalty area for the early lead.
Just over five minutes later it was
Abby Holbrook recording her third goal of the season when she took a ball from
Lexi Tucker and beat the keeper inside the near post from 30 yards out.
Jessica James made it 3-0 in the 31st minute when her shot from 35 yards deflected off the crossbar and into the goal for her second of the season.
North would add her second goal of the game and fifth of the season in the 66th minute when she tapped in a cross by
Heidi Lorschider. The goal gave North the fifth multi-goal game of her career which ties her with Jennifer Pirente for the school record.
Jennifer Beaudoin added her second goal of the season in the 69th minute on a pass by
Madison Roemer and then Tucker concluded the scoring in the 74th minute as she scored her fourth goal of the season from the top of the penalty area on a ball played by
Maddie Buckner.
The Griffins finished the contest with 24 shots and they put 14 of them on goal. They limited the Mustangs to just four shots and also had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Abi Yanke earned her seventh victory of the season and used three saves to post her fifth shutout of the campaign. This is also the Griffins NAIA-leading sixth shutout as a team.
Westminster will continue this road trip on Saturday when they travel to Winona Lake, Ind. for a 6 p.m. MT contest at Grace (Ind.).
