SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster men's soccer team completed an unbeaten opening weekend with a 1-0 win over Bethesda (Calif.) on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Westminster Kickoff Classic.
Â
Westminster (3-0-1) was outshot for the second-straight contest, but they used a 23rd-minute goal from
Andrew Clayton to earn the victory. Clayton scored his first goal of the season after
Manuel Duenas played a ball through two defenders and found a streaking Clayton. The sophomore then bent a shot around a charging keeper for his the first goal of his career.
Â
Bethesda (1-2) would create chances throughout the afternoon and finished the game with a 16-11 edge in shot attempts. The Griffins did a nice job of limiting those shots to only five on goal. On the offensive end, Westminster put three shots on frame.
Â
Logan Butzier claimed his seventh career shutout with five saves and helped extend the Griffins streak without allowing a goal to 369 minutes.
Â
Westminster will remain at home for another week as they prepare to host the Westminster Labor Day Classic next weekend. They begin the weekend on Friday when they host Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) at 4:30 p.m. MT at Dumke Field.
