Griffins Defeat Tech, 79-58, to Complete Perfect Conference Season

Box Score BUTTE, Mont. – The No. 3 Westminster College women's basketball team completed the second perfect conference season in school history with a 79-58 win at Montana Tech on Saturday night in the regular season finale.

Westminster used the win to finish 16-0 in Frontier Conference play and record the first perfect conference slate since 2009. The Griffins won for the 15th-straight time and they completed the regular season at 22-2.

The Griffins would lead 34-30 before outscoring Montana Tech (11-12, 7-9 Frontier), 45-28, in the final 20 minutes. The majority of the second-half difference came on an 18-6 run by Westminster through the middle of the half. The used the run to turn a 52-45 lead at the 10:04 mark into a 19-point advantage just five minutes later.

Three Griffins scored in double figures in the win with Alli Blake and Shelby Ellsworth scoring 21 and 20 points respectively. It was the second-straight 20-point performance for Blake and her third in the past four games. She also grabbed four rebounds — 3 offensive — with four assists, two blocks and two steals.

Ellsworth added four rebounds, five assists and four steals to her season-high 20 points. Tia Pappas finished with 13 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Westminster finished the game shooting 54.5 percent from the field after a 59.3 percent second half. They scored 36 points in the paint with 18 assists and only four turnovers. They limited Tech to 44.7 percent shooting and scored 29 points from the 16 turnovers.

Kabri Emerson led the Orediggers with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Kelsey DeWit added 12 points and Mandy Machinl scored 10.

The Griffins will now be off until March 8 when they host a Frontier Conference Tournament semi-final game in the Behnken Field House. They will play the lowest remaining seed after the March 1 quarterfinals at 7 p.m. MST. Westminster will also host the championship game on March 11 at 7 p.m. with a semi-final victory.
