Box Score BUTTE, Mont. – The No. 21 Westminster College men's basketball team clinched the second-seed in the upcoming Frontier Conference Tournament with an 80-73 win at Montana Tech on Saturday night in the regular season finale.
Westminster finishes the regular season at 18-11 overall and they went 11-5 in Frontier Conference action. They won five of the final six games of the season to tie Montana State-Northern for that second position and the Griffins claimed the tiebreaker by sweeping the regular season series.
Tallon Robertson carried the Griffins behind a career high 36 points with a 16-of-21 shooting performance. His point total is tied for the sixth-most ever scored in a game by a Griffin and the most since Nick Booth had 37 in 2006. He helped the team score 52 points in the paint while also grabbing eight rebounds.
The Griffins shot the ball great all evening and finished the game shooting a season-best 68.1 percent from the floor. That is the third-best shooting performance for a team in Griffin history and the highest the team has shot since a 68.6 percent night in 2001.
Blake Skidmore provided support to Robertson's big night with 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting.
Jordan Pryor added 10 points off the bench. Robertson also had three assists, two blocked shots and one steal in the win.
Montana Tech (13-15, 5-11 Frontier) made it interesting late as they cut a 20-point Griffin lead down to five in the closing minutes. The Orediggers finished with 54 points in the paint and they scored 19 points from 19 Westminster turnovers. Bryan Bock led Tech with 18 points while Travis Peevey added 13.
Westminster will host a semi-final game of the conference tournament on March 7 in the Behnken Field House. They will play the lowest remaining seed after Friday's quarterfinal games at 7 p.m. MST for a trip to the conference title game. Should the Griffins win and top-seeded Rocky Mountain (Mont.) be upset, the Griffins will host the title game on March 10 at 7 p.m.
