SALT LAKE CITY – The 24th-ranked Westminster women's soccer team closed the 2014 regular season with a 2-1 win over Rocky Mountain (Mont.) on Sunday afternoon at Dumke Field to clinch the 2014 Frontier Conference title.
Westminster moves to 13-3-2 overall this season and they set a new school record for wins in a season. They finished 4-2 in conference play to claim their first outright conference title.
The first half was played to a scoreless tie with each team taking five shots. The Griffins would break through less than two minutes into the second half.
Lexi Tucker took a free kick from about 40 yards that was misplayed by the Rocky Mountain keeper. It rolled to the foot of
Rylei North who tapped it into the empty net for her 12th goal of the season.
Westminster would extend the advantage to 2-0 in the 61st minute when
Jennifer Beaudoin found her third goal of the season.
Nicole Carter played the corner kick into the penalty area where it came to Beadoiun for her first game-winner of the year.
Rocky Mountain (8-7-1, 3-2-1 Frontier) got one back in the 88th minute from a corner kick of their own. Jenny Richards played the ball in where Therese Hgbyhn headed it home for her first goal of the season.
The Griffins ended the afternoon with a 12-11 edge in shot attempts and they were able to put five of their attempts on goal. North took four of the shots with all of them on goal.
Abi Yanke extended her school record with her 13th victory in goal with six saves.
Westminster will advance to next week's Frontier/North Star Conference Tournament in Billings, Mont. The Griffins are the top seed and will receive a bye into the semifinals where they will face the lowest reaming seed on Saturday at 11 a.m. MT.
