Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Griffins Snap Skid with Overtime Victory

SALT LAKE CITY – On a day the Westminster men's soccer team celebrated its seniors, they also snapped a four-game losing skid against Rocky Mountain (Mont.) with a 1-0 overtime victory in a Frontier Conference game at Dumke Field.

The win moved Westminster to 9-8-1 overall this season and they finish 3-3 in the Frontier Conference. With the loss, Rocky Mountain slips to 8-9 and 3-3.

The game was extremely physical and chippy throughout the first 45 minutes. Things would calm down after halftime, but the game featured 25 fouls and eight cautions. Neither team would find a goal through the 90 minutes of regulation and the game moved into overtime.

In the 95th minute of play it would be Connor Thompson that found a winner for the Griffins to snap that skid against Rocky. Anthony Alcox played a free kick into the penalty area where Thompson gained possession and put a shot off the left post and into the goal. It was the team-leading fifth goal of the season for Thompson and his third game-winner.

Each team took 10 shots in the game with the Griffins getting four on goal. Alcox had a shot at the winner in regulation, but his attempt hit the crossbar and bounced away.

Westminster will now move to the Frontier/North Star Conference Tournament next weekend in Billings, Mont. The Griffins are the tournament's No. 3 seed and they opened against sixth-seeded Presentation (S.D.) on Thursday at 11 a.m. MT.
