BILLINGS, Mont. – The Westminster men's soccer team had its season come to an end with heartbreak penalties loss to Presentation (S.D.) in the quarterfinals of the Frontier/North Star Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon at COT Field. The two teams played to a 1-1 draw in regulation and after neither team scored in the 20 minutes of overtime, Presentation advanced to the semifinal with a 5-3 advantage in the penalties.
Westminster, the tournament's No. 3 seed, will end its season at 9-8-2 overall as they go out in their first postseason game for the fourth time in the past five trips to the conference tournament. Sixth-seeded Presentation will advance at 3-12-2 on the year.
The Griffins seemed to control the game throughout the afternoon and they took the 1-0 lead in the 36th minute when
Connor Thompson found
Anthony Alcox for his third goal of the season. That lead held through the remainder of the first half where the Griffins held a 14-3 edge in shots at the break.
Westminster continued to apply pressure in the second half, as they took another seven shots to just two from presentation, but they couldn't find an insurance goal. That would come back to haunt them when Andrew Bravo would find the equalizer for the Saints with less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime.
The Griffins outshot Presentation 3-0 in the extra 20 minutes, but again came up empty which forced the game to be decided with penalty kicks. After
Matthew Warne failed to score on the first attempt for the Griffins, Presentation went 5-for-5 and closed out the win with a hit from Terry Kampa.
