Box Score HAVRE, Mont. – The Westminster College men's basketball team bounced back from a last second lost at Great Falls (Mont.) on Friday night with a 69-59 win at 15th-ranked Montana State-Northern on Saturday night at Armory Gymnasium.
Westminster (11-7, 4-1 Frontier) rode the two-man show of
Tallon Robertson and
Blake Skidmore to snap a three-game losing streak in Havre dating back to the last win in 2010. The two seniors combined for 47 of the Griffins 69 points as Westminster now sits atop the Frontier Conference standings as the only team with one loss.
The Griffins took advantage of 32 points in the paint to shoot 57.5 percent from the field. They were also connecting from deep where they went 5-of-11 for a 45.5 percentage. Westminster controlled the glass to the tune of a 30-24 advantage with three offensive rebounds resulting in seven points.
Robertson led all scorers with 24 points for his second straight 20-point performance and seventh of the season. he was 8-of-14 from the field and 8-of-12 at the foul line with seven rebounds. Skidmore used five threes to carry him to 23 points and his fifth 20-point night this season. He shot 9-of-16 on the night and corralled six rebounds.
It was the defense that anchored the victory as Westminster held MSU-Northern (15-4, 3-2) to 38 percent from the field and 8-of-18 from beyond the arc. The Griffins forced 10 turnovers which they turned into 12 points while only allowing the Lights two second chance points.
Nick Jenson added 10 points and six rebounds for the Griffins.
Jordan Pryor finished with six points to lead a bench that finished with 19 points.
Northern put three players in double figures led by 16 from Roshawn West. Alfie Miller added 12 points and Corbin Pearson finished with 11.
The Griffins will now open a three-game home stand when they host Montana Western on Jan. 18. The action from the Behnken Field House has an early tip time of 4 p.m. MST.
