Women Conclude Regular Season with 61-42 Win over Tech

Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The third-ranked Westminster College women's basketball team closed out the regular season with a 61-42 win over Montana Tech on Saturday night in the Behnken Field House.

Westminster finishes 25-3 overall during the season and they claimed a fifth-straight Frontier Conference title by going 13-1 in league play. Montana Tech falls to 16-12 overall and 9-7 in the Frontier and they will be the No. 3 seed in next week's conference tournament.

The Griffins used a 14-4 run in the opening minutes of the game to build a 16-7 lead. That early stretch featured a pair of threes from Nicole Yazzie and was capped with a layup from Cydney Tibbitts. After Tech got back within five at the 12:55 mark of the half, the Griffins put together a 17-6 run that closed the half with Westminster ahead, 33-17.

Montana Tech would be within 14 with 8:40 to play in regulation before the Griffins used a 14-3 run to put the game away. Yazzie scored five points during the stretch with Allie Eastman adding four. The lead would reach a game-high of 37 with 3:55 to play before Tech closed with nine of the game's final 12 points.

Westminster shot 44.2 percent from the floor and outscored the visitors 28-8 in the paint. They made six of their 16 attempts (37.5 percent) from beyond the arc. Westminster had a 37-29 edge on the boards and they turned eight offensive rebounds into seven second chance points. They limited Tech to 30 percent shooting and forced them into 17 turnovers which resulted in 15 Griffin points.

All five Griffin seniors scored on Senior Night. Yazzie lead all scorers with 18 points on 7-of-13 from the field and she went 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. She also added five assists, five rebounds and one steal. Tibbitts finished with 13 points and eight rebounds with Eastman Adding 10. Brooke Larsen added seven points to her 10 rebounds with fellow senior Olivia-Pierce-Eiselein recording two points, two rebounds and one block.

Danielle Devenny led Tech with 14 points while Mandy Machinal added 13.

The Griffins won't return to action until Friday, March 1 when they host a Frontier Conference Tournament semi-final game. They will play the lowest remaining seed after Tuesday's quarterfinal games. Tipoff in the Behnken Field House will be at 7 p.m.
