Long Ball Haunts Griffins in Loss at Northern

Box Score HAVRE, Mont. – The 18th-ranked Westminster College men's basketball team suffered an 85-81 loss at No. 12 Montana State-Northern on Saturday night in Frontier Conference action.

Westminster falls to 20-7 overall this season with this third straight loss. They are now 7-6 in Frontier Conference games and currently sit in fifth place. MSU-Northern goes to 22-6 and 10-4 with the win.

Jake Orchard did everything he could to snap the Griffins losing skid. The senior scored a season-high 32 points by making 11-of-16 from the field and going 9-of-9 at the foul line. He also grabbed four rebounds and handed out four assists. Alex Drecksel added 17 points, one shy of his career high, and he pulled down five rebounds. Colton Moon and Jordan Hayter scored nine points apiece.

The Griffins shot a season-high 58.8 percent from the field, but they made just 4-of-14 from beyond the arc (28.6 percent). The long ball was the key to the game as Northern finished 10-of-16 from deep (62.5 percent). Westminster had a 21-18 edge on the glass and they outscored the home squad 36-12 in the paint.

Devin Jackson led four in double figures for Northern with 24 points. He made three from deep and was perfect in nine attempts at the foul line. Jesse Vaughan added 16 points with Roshawn West and Alfie Miller going for 15 and 13 respectively.

Westminster will look to snap this current skid on Thursday when they travel to Helena, Mont. to face Carroll (Mont.). The game will be carried live in HD on the Altitude Sports Network with an 8 p.m. tipoff.
