Box Score OCEANSIDE, Calif. – Despite a double-double from
Nick Jenson, the Westminster College men's basketball team lost to Vanguard (Calif.), 76-65, in the opening game of the Cal State San Marcos Holiday Classic.
Jenson finished the game with 14 points and 14 rebounds to notch his first career double-double for Westminster (7-5). Down by 13 in the first half, Jenson would grab an offensive rebound and then beat the buzzer with a layup to send the Griffins into intermission trailing 33-27.
Westminster would use a 9-2 run midway through the second half, capped with a three pointer from
Colton Moon, to take the lead at 48-47 with 10:16 to play. Vanguard (9-2) would take control of the game with a 12-2 span that gave the Lions a 71-59 lead with 1:55 remaining.
Quincy Bair would add 11 points for the Griffins with
Jordan Pryor adding 10 points off the bench. Westminster's two leading scorers –
Tallon Robertson and
Blake Skidmore – combined to score seven points, 24 points below their average. Moon finished with nine points and four assists.
Vanguard had four players in double figures led by Preston Wynne and his 24. The Lions forced Westminster into a season-high 23 turnovers which they turned into 19 points.
The Griffins will return to the court on Wednesday when they face eighth-ranked Cal State San Marcos at 8:30 p.m. MST from MiraCosta College.
