Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The fifth-ranked Westminster College women's basketball team moved to 3-0 on the season and completed a perfect Westminster Fall Classic with a 71-65 win over College of Idaho on Friday night in the Behnken Field House.
Westminster took a 32-30 lead into halftime shooting 13-of-30 from the floor with five threes in the first 20 minutes. College of Idaho (0-3) used a 19-8 run that spanned the two halves to take a 40-38 lead with 15:44 to play in the second half.
The Griffins would respond with 15 straight points to build a 53-40 advantage that they never relinquished. Westminster went 5-of-8 from the floor during the run and knocked down a pair of treys during the four minute burst. C of I had an 11-2 run over the final three minutes to get within in three, but
Alli Blake secured the Griffins win by scoring the final three points of the game.
Westminster finished the game shooting 43.1 percent from the field while shooting 9-of-21 from beyond the arc. They scored 34 points in the paint while posting 17 assists and only eight turnovers. The Griffins forced the Yotes into 10 turnovers which they turned into 19 points.
Kelsi Wells led Westminster with a season-high 17 points on a 7-of-12 shooting night. She had three makes from deep while adding seven rebounds. Blake finished with 14 points, five rebounds, and five assists.
Alli Winters added 12 points on four triples and
Shelby Ellsworth had 10 points, for rebounds, and six assists.
Chakala Carthen recorded a double-double for C of I with 20 points and 10 rebounds in just 18 minutes of action.
The Griffins will now travel to California for a pair of games next weekend. They begin at Biola (Calif.) on Nov. 15 before visiting top-ranked Vanguard (Calif.) on Nov. 16.
