Griffins Win Defensive Battle with College of Idaho

Jordan Pryor
Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College men's basketball team used a stingy defensive effort to claim a 69-55 win over College of Idaho on Friday night in the Westminster Thanksgiving Classic.

Westminster (5-4) avenged an earlier loss to College of Idaho and snapped their eight-game winning streak. They held C of I (8-3) to 37 points below their season average and just 33 percent shooting in the game. The Griffins forced 22 turnovers which resulted in 19 Griffin points.

"This is one of my favorite ways to win a game," head coach Adam Hiatt said of the defensive effort. "Our guys defended on every possession and really battled against a great team."

It wasn't a pretty offensive night for Westminster as they shot just 37.5 percent from the floor themselves. The Griffins made just 4-of-14 (28.6%) from beyond the arc and also committed 14 turnovers. They scored 22 points in the paint and had a 39-33 edge on the boards with 12 offensive rebounds.

Jordan Pryor came up big for the Griffins with a season-high 22 points by shooting 5-of-9 from the floor. The sophomore missed his career-best of 23 despite making 12 of his 15 attempts at the foul line. He also tied for the team lead with three assists and had one steal.

Colton Moon added a season-high 15 points and two threes in the first half and another with the shot clock winding down in the second. Quincy Bair and Blake Skidmore finished with eight points apiece while Tallon Robertson went for five points and 12 rebounds. Nick Jenson recorded seven points, three rebounds and three steals in his first career start.

C of I was led by 10 points off the bench from Joe Vaz. Josh Wilson, Demetrius Perkins and Sydney Donaldson all scored nine points for the Yotes.

The Griffins have now won eight straight games during the Thanksgiving Classic dating back to 2009. They return to action on Saturday at 6 p.m. MST when they face Pacific Union (Calif.). College of Idaho and Montana Tech will tip at 4 p.m. MST to start the day.
