Jaime Nelson
Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The 22nd-ranked Westminster College women's soccer team opened Frontier Conference play with a 4-1 win over Great Falls (Mont.) on Monday afternoon at Dumke Field.

Westminster improved to 4-0 on the season with the win and is 1-0 in league games. Great Falls drops to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the Frontier.

The Griffins will get on the board early when Jaime Nelson headed home a free kick from Lorin Wathen in the fourth minute. It was the first goal of the season for Nelson while Wathen recorded her fourth assist of the campaign.

Rylei North would then join the scoring in the 19th minute as she intercepted an attempted clear and blasted a shot into the UGF net to give the Griffins a 2-0 lead. The goal was the sixth of the year for North and it turned out to be her third game-winner.

Carissa Cooper would add her first goal of the year in the 35th minute when she rebounded a shot by Margo Hickman and tapped it into the goal. That would give the Griffins a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.  Great Falls would cut into the deficit in the 57th minute when Kayelyn Swart fired a shot through the hands of Westminster keeper Abi Yanke and into the net. That snapped a stretch of 696 consecutive minute without a goal against the Griffins by Great Falls dating back to 2008.

Hickman would tally the final goal of the game in the 87th minute. The senior took an excellent pass from Amanda Peppers and finished to the far post from just inside the penalty area. It was Hickman's second goal of the year and the first assist for the freshman Peppers.

Westminster held a 16-6 advantage in total shots and they managed to put eight of those on goal. They were awarded two corner kicks and held UGF to just two shots on goal.  Justine Jones led the attack with five shots, putting two on goal, with Hickman attempting three shots.  Dayna Winter-Nolte earned the win after making one stop during her 56 minutes in net.

The Griffins will have a few days off before facing Westmont (Calif.) on Sept. 7 in Santa Barbara, Calif. The first road game of the season for the Griffins begins at 4 p.m.
