Men’s Soccer to Play Four Games in Kansas

SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College men's soccer team will play four games in five days all in the state of Kansas this week. Westminster begins the stretch on Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Friends in Wichita. They then take a day off before playing at Sterling on Friday at 3 p.m. On Saturday, the Griffins play at No. 18 Kansas Wesleyan at noon before completing the trip on Sunday against McPherson at 1 p.m.

Griffin Notebook
Westminster hits the road with a 5-2-1 overall record. They didn't play last week after sweeping a pair of home games the week before. The 5-2-1 start is the best record through eight games since the 2012 team went 7-1 to start the year. This is the 15th time in 29 years the Griffins have won at least five of the first eight games of the season.

The Griffins have outscored their opponents 14-10 this season and have an 11-8 edge in assists. Westminster fires 15.2 shots per game and has put 42 shots on goal this season. Defensively they hold the opposition to 5.8 shots per game and have made 17 saves.

Ryan Smith is the team-leader in goals and assists with five and three respectively. His 13 points are tied for third-most in the conference and 49th in the NAIA. He also leads the Griffins with 24 total shots and 10 shots on goal while leading the league with three game-winning goals. Seven Griffins have scored one goal apiece and Wilson Larson has three assists and five points. Chris Cook has added an assist to his goal for three points.

Damir Sabanovic has played the majority of minutes in goal with a 1.16 GAA in seven starts. The senior has made 13 saves to earn four wins and three shutouts. Nathan Young has appeared in two games (one start) and has made four saves with a 1.48 GAA.

Against the Opposition
Westminster has a 3-2 all-time record against the four teams they will play this week. They are 1-0 against both Sterling and McPherson and have a 1-2 record against Kansas Wesleyan. Wednesday's game will be the first meeting with Friends.
