Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The 14th-ranked Westminster College women's basketball team suffered a 55-49 loss to No. 13 Lewis-Clark State College in the title game of the Frontier Conference Tournament on Tuesday evening in the Behnken Field House.
Westminster (22-8) had its 11-game winning streak snapped and now must wait until Wednesday to be assured of an at-large invite to the NAIA National Championships. The Griffins are expected to receive that invite based on their current national ranking.
The game was a defensive slugfest throughout as neither team could establish any consistency on the offensive end. Westminster shot just 29.4% from the floor in the game and went 6-of-20 from beyond the arc. Lewis-Clark State (28-4) shot 41.2% in the game despite going 1-of-14 from distance.
After the visiting Warriors jumped out to a 12-3 lead at he 10:49 mark of the opening half, Westminster stormed back with an 18-4 run to end the half. The run featured 11 straight points over a five minute stretch that featured back-to-back triples from
Tia Pappas.
The Griffins lead would reach nine at 27-18 with 17:34 remaining after a steal and layup from
Nicole Yazzie. LCSC continued to chip away and with 3:15 remaining they had the deficit down to 44-43.
Dana Bates connected with just the second three of the half for the Griffins on the next possession to put Westminster back on top 47-43 with 2:51 to play.
Tasha Bishop answered with a three on the next Warrior possession to steals al of the momentum. The Griffins would manage just two Yazzie free throws the rest of the way while LCSC would get a layup from Kirsi Voshell and then make 5-of-6 free throws to claim the championship.
Westminster put four players in double figures with Yazzie and
Shelby Ellsworth scoring 11 apiece. Bates and Pappas added 10 each with Bates also grabbing a team-bets seven rebounds. The team scored 13 points from the 14 LCSC turnovers and they went 13-of-14 at the foul line.
Jasmine Stohr led the Warriors with 19 points with Voshell adding 16 points and 11 rebounds. LCSC has now won five straight Frontier Conference Tournament championships with three of the last four coming against the Griffins in Salt lake City.
The 2012 NAIA Division I Women's Basketball National Championship will be played in Frankfort, Ky. from March 14-20. Westminster has qualified for the event for each of the past five seasons, while reaching the second round in all but one of those trips.
