Vanguard Ends Griffins Streak at Eight

Box Score COSTA MESA, Calif. – The fourth-ranked Westminster College women's basketball team had its eight-game winning streak with a 73-51 loss at No. 3 Vanguard (Calif.) on Saturday afternoon.

Westminster (8-2) couldn't overcome a slow start and shot just 34.6 percent from the floor in the game. The Griffins went just 8-of-29 (27.6 percent) from beyond the arc out were out-rebounded 42-25. Vanguard (5-0) scored 16 points from 16 Westminster turnovers and had 21 points from 16 offensive rebounds.

Nicole Yazzie led three Griffins in double figures with 15 points on a 5-of-14 shooting night. The senior made two threes, but finished with just one assist. Cydney Tibbitts had 14 points and four rebounds on a 6-for-12 shooting night and two treys. Allie Eastman added 10 points and three assists.

The game was tied four times early in the first half and when Yazzie scored a fast break layup with 11:21 to play the game was level as 12-12. Vanguard would then put together a 17-3 run over the next six minutes to build a 14 point lead and never look back. Brooke Larsen would score with 3:27 to play in the half to get Westminster within seven, but that would be as close as they got the rest of the game.

Vanguard had two players score at least 20 points with Nicole Ballestero posting 25 and Esther Timmermans getting 22 points. Timmermans added 15 rebounds, including six offensive.

Westminster will be back in action on Dec. 15 when they travel to Claremore, Okla. to face Rogers State.
