Women’s Hoops Moves to 2-0 after 71-63 win

Box Score DILLON, Mont. – The Westminster College women's basketball team picked up a fourth straight win on Saturday as they defeated Montana Western 71-63 at Straugh Gymnasium.

Westminster improved their record to 9-6 overall this season and move to a perfect 2-0 in the Frontier Conference with the win.  UMW slips to 11-4 and 1-1 one night after defeating No. 4 Lewis-Clark State by 20 points.

The Griffins took advantage of their size throughout the night as they scored 30 points in the paint to just 16 by Western.  Westminster shot 44.2% from the floor in the game, and needed the inside scoring to cover the 31.3% shooting from beyond the arc.

Westminster grabbed 41 rebounds on the evening and turned nine offensive rebounds into nine second chance points.  The ball was moving as well with three different Griffins posting at least three assists to help the squad to 16 assists on 23 field goals.  The defense held Western to 33.3% shooting and forced them into 14 turnovers.

A balanced scoring night saw four players reach double figures for the Griffins.  Dana Bates led the way with 16 points while also grabbing eight rebounds.  Cydney Tibbitts recorded a second straight double-double, and third in four games, with 13 points and 10 rebounds.   Nicole Yazzie and Allie Eastman scored 12 points each.  Yazzie and Brooke Larsen had four assists each with Tibbitts adding three.

Hayley Pettit finished the night with 19 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs.  Sammi Bignell added 15 points with two makes from beyond the arc.

The Griffins will now return home for the Frontier Conference home opener on Thursday when they host Carroll College in the Behnken Field House at 5:30 p.m.
