Yazzie and Defense Carry Griffins over Northern

Box Score HAVRE, Mont. – The 20th-ranked Westminster College women's basketball team picked up its eighth win over the last nine games with a 56-39 win over Montana State-Northern on Saturday evening in Frontier Conference action.

With the win, Westminster improved to 13-7 overall this season while maintaining a one-game lead for first place in the conference at the halfway point with a 6-1 mark.  Northern dips to 16-5 overall and 3-4 in league.

The Griffins limited the home squad to just 18 first half points and carried a 27-18 lead into intermission.  The 39 total points scored by the Skylights mark the fewest allowed by the Griffins since they held Walla Walla to 38 on Nov. 16, 2007.  MSUN shot just 37.5% from the floor on the night and committed 20 turnovers.

The Westminster offense got a stellar night from junior Nicole Yazzie.  The Griffins leading scorer racked up 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting for her fourth 20-point game of the season and first since Dec. 3.  Yazzie connected from beyond the arc three times and was perfect on three free throw attempts. She added five rebounds and two assists.

As a team, Westminster shot 41.2% from the floor in the game and was 6-of-18 from distance.  They grabbed 31 rebounds to 28 from Northern while collecting 10 assists and nine steals.

Amy Krommenhoek added 10 points off the Griffin bench.  This is the fourth double-digit scoring night of her career and the third in seven league games.  Dana Bates chipped in nine points, seven rebounds and three assists.  Cydney Tibbits grabbed a team-best nine boards with three steals.

Laramie Schwenke and Jordan Bruuresma led the way for the Skylights with 11 points apiece.  Bruuresma also grabbed 10 rebounds and had two blocked shots.

Westminster will open the second half of conference play on Thursday when they welcome Montana Western to the Behnken Field House.  The action begins at 5:30 p.m. and will be available live on Griffins TV.
