SALT LAKE CITY – For the second straight match the Westminster College women's volleyball team won a home match in five sets. On Saturday, they defeated Great Falls 32-30, 25-27, 25-14, 22-25, 19-17 to claim a fourth straight victory.
Westminster (7-7, 4-2 Frontier) and Great Falls (17-4, 2-3) battled all afternoon and minus the third set, neither team held a lead of more than four points in the entire match. In all, the match featured 54 ties and 26 lead changes with 26 ties and 10 lead changes coming in the opening stanza.
UGF seemed poised to take the match as they built a 13-10 lead in the fifth set. The Griffins would rally to tie the match at 13 thanks to a service ace from
Katie Vance and a kill by
Kenzie Mitchell. The set would then be tied again at 14-14, 15-15, 16-16 and 17-17. Westminster won the set by getting kills from
Ashley Marchant and hen forcing a hitting error from Tosha Nunes on the match's final swing.
The two teams combined for 140 kills with UGF holding a slight 74-66 advantage. Westminster hit .240 for the match behind just 20 hitting errors. In turn, Westminster forced the Argonauts into 39 hitting errors and limited the visitors to a .170 hitting efficiency. The Griffins also collected 79 digs, seven service aces and 8.5 blocks.
Mitchell led three Griffins in double figures with 15 kills. The sophomore hit .438 in the match with only one error on 32 swings. She added five digs and three blocks to her afternoon totals.
Stephanie Jones Morin contributed 14 kills and a .400 hitting efficiency. Marchant went for 13 kills and 10 digs.
Emily Atkinson surpassed the 50 assist plateau for the second straight match with 52 while grabbing 15 digs for a second straight double-double.
Kyndall Kordakis picked up a season-high 32 digs.
Kelsey VanUden led the Argos with 27 kills and a .316 hitting efficiency. Taylor Lucero had 14 kills and three blocks while Kyah Piva recorded 26 digs.
Westminster will look to continue their four-match winning streak on Friday when they face nationally-ranked Lewis-Clark State in Lewiston, Idaho. The Griffins only match of the week will begin at 8 p.m.
