Westminster Starts Year with Two Wins at Bison Blast

SHAWNEE, Okla. – The Westminster College women's volleyball team picked up two wins to start the season at the Bison Blast on Friday. Westminster opened with a 3-0 sweep of William Woods this morning and then battled for a 3-2 victory over John Brown in the evening.

The Griffins are now 2-0 on the year and this is the second consecutive year they have won the season's opening two matches.

Ashley Marchant opened the year with her first career double-double in the Griffins 25-21, 25-12, 26-24 win over William Woods. Marchant finished the match with 12 kills and 10 digs while hitting a career-best .500. Kenzie Mitchell added nine kills as the team finished with a 40-18 advantage in kills. Westminster also recorded 44 digs in the match led by 14 from Kyndall Kordakis.

Marchant came back against John Brown to lead four Griffins in double figures with 13 kills. Westminster's balanced attack allowed them to hold off John Brown 22-25, 25-23, 25-20, 26-28, 15-11. Stephanie Jones Morin finished with 12 kills while Mitchell and Katie Vance had 11 and 10 kills respectively. The 13 kills for Marchant are her most since she posted 18 on September 4, 2009. She also added a career high 22 digs for consecutive double-doubles. Mitchell posted 15 digs for her first career double-double and Kordakis popped up 17 digs.

Westminster will conclude the tournament with two matches against nationally ranked foes on Saturday. They face No. 4 Texas at Brownsville in an 11 a.m. match which is followed with a 5 p.m. match against the host and No. 19 Oklahoma Baptist.
