BUTTE, Mont. – The ninth-ranked Westminster women's basketball team avenged its only conference loss of the year with an 80-68 victory over Montana Tech on Saturday night. Tech defeated Westminster 88-76 last month in Salt Lake City.
The win improves the Griffins to 21-4 on the year and 8-1 in the Frontier Conference. Montana Tech falls to 15-9 and 4-5 with the loss.
Westminster held just a 36-34 lead at halftime before winning the second 20 minutes 44-34. The lead was two at the eight minute mark, but Westminster played stellar defense and made free throws. Tech shot just 34.4% in the game and had 23 turnovers. The Griffins made 24-of-26 at the foul line, including 17-of-19 in the second half.
Four Griffins reached double figures in scoring led by 17 from
Nicole Yazzie. The sophomore guard shot 6-of-13 with three makes from beyond the arc with three assists.
Dana Bates had 14 points off the bench while collecting four rebounds.
Allie Eastman and
Dani Evans scored 13 and 11 points respectively.
Brooke Pokorny led Tech with 19 points with Taeshe Higbee posting 17 points and 15 rebounds.
Westminster will return home for the final home stand of the year next week. The action begins at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 11 against Rocky Mountain.
