Box Score LEWISTON, Idaho – It took and extra five minutes, but the ninth-ranked Westminster women's basketball team regained the top spot in the Frontier Conference with a 65-62 overtime victory against No. 11 Lewis-Clark State on Saturday night.
The win completes a regular season sweep of LC State by the Griffins and improves them to 23-5 overall and 10-2 in conference. LC State falls to 23-4 and 9-3.
LCSC led 58-56 with 1:58 remaining after Alyssa Fierro made two free throws. Both teams failed on consecutive possessions and then
Jenteal Jackson had her 3-point attempt blocked out of bounds with 24 seconds left and seven on the shot clock. After a Griffin timeout,
Michelle Pace grabbed a missed three from
Dani Evans and put in the game tying layup. Alyssa Fierro missed a jumper as time expired for the Warriors.
Angela Fales made a three with 3:11 left in overtime that put Westminster ahead 61-58. LCSC would score the next four points of the game and would lead 62-61 when Pace was fouled with 1:22 remaining. After she made both freebies, Westminster forced a miss by Jamsine Stohr and then Pace grabbed the offensive rebound of a Jackson miss. She then made two more free throws to give the Griffins a 65-62 advantage. Madison Mendezona missed a three as time expired for LCSC.
Westminster overcame 37.9% shooting and 23 turnovers by making seven triples and going 14-of-19 at the foul line. The Griffins also held LC State to 33.3% shooting and just 7.7% from beyond the arc. Westminster forced 19 turnovers and scored 16 points from those Warrior miscues.
Pace led three Griffins in double figures with 17 points. She grabbed eight rebounds and was perfect on nine free throw attempts.
Nicole Yazzie added 15 points and two rebounds while
Jenteal Jackson had 13 points and four assists. Jackson and Evans had two treys apiece.
Fierro led LC State with 20 points while grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds. The Warriors won the rebounding battle 42-39 with 20 on the offensive end.
Westminster will continue this season-ending three-game road trip on Friday, February 25 when they face Montana State-Northern in Havre, Mont.
