Cold Shooting Snaps Win Streak

SALT LAKE CITY – The eighth-ranked Westminster women's basketball team had a tough night shooting the ball in a 58-54 loss to Carroll College on Saturday night in the Behnken Field House.

Westminster shot just 38% from the field in the game and loses for the first time in nine outings. The Griffins are now 22-5 on the year and 9-2 in the Frontier Conference.

Westminster stared the game just 1-of-8 and trailed 9-3 in the opening six minutes. The shooting woes continued and with 6:36 to play in the first half, Carroll (18-8, 5-5) held a nine point advantage. The Griffins would used a 13-0 run that bridged the two halves to open up 33-28 lead with 16:34 to play in the game. Carroll would retake the lead at 41-40 with 9:04 to play and never look back. Westminster would get to within 56-54 with 14 second left, but Nancy Johnson made two free throws to seal the Carroll victory.

Westminster would shoot just 33.3% form the field in the second half and finished the night 1-of-13 from beyond the arc. The one made three is the fewest since a 0-for-9 night against Carroll at the 2007 Frontier Conference Tournament. The Griffins did score 36 points in the paint and score six points from nine offensive rebounds.

The griffins kept themselves in the game by playing excellent defense. Carroll shot just 38.8% from the floor and only 35.3% on threes. Westminster also forced 14 turnovers and scored nine points from them while making 15-of-20 at the foul line.

Michelle Pace was the only Griffin in double figures with 19 points. The senior forward was 5-of-12 from the field with nine makes at the stripe and four rebounds in her final regular season home game. Dana Bates finished with nine points off the bench and grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. Nicole Yazzie and Brooke Larsen added seven points while Dani Evans had six. Yazzie also posted five steals.

Alysha Green led three Saints in double figures with 13 points. Jessica Van Dyke had 12 points and 10 rebounds while Jeni Guertin had 11 points.

Westminster will now begin a season ending three-game road trip with a game at nationally ranked Lewis-Clark State College. The first place battle will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 19 in Lewiston, Idaho.
