SALT LAKE CITY – Behind five players in double figures the eighth-ranked Westminster women's basketball team defeated Rocky Mountain College 85-77 on Thursday night in the Behnken Field House. Westminster has now won nine straight games to match the longest streak of the season.
Westminster is now 22-4 overall and 9-1 in the Frontier Conference. Rocky drops to 11-13 and 4-5.
Westminster used a balanced attack offensively all night as eight of the nine players that played scored. The griffins shot 41.9% from the floor while making nine threes on 23 attempts. The nation's second leading free throw shooting team went 24-of-30 (80%) and they have now shot above 70% in three straight games. Westminster distributed the ball well as they posted 21 assists on 26 field goals with only nine turnovers.
On the defensive end, Westminster held Rocky to 34.8% shooting. The Griffins forced 14 turnovers and scored 21 points from them. Westminster overcame a 44-38 rebounding disadvantage by scoring 14 points from 12 offensive rebounds.
Nicole Yazzie led the way for the Griffins with 18 points. She went 5-of-10 from the field and made seven of her eight attempts at the charity stripe.
Jenteal Jackson scored 16 points which is the most she has scored in a conference game this season. Her all around game added five assists and a career high seven steals.
Dana Bates had 13 points and six rebounds in her first career start.
Dani Evans and
Brooke Larsen had 12 points apiece.
Callie Kautzmann led Rocky with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Rocky turned 19 offensive rebounds into 18 second chance points and got 25 points from the bench.
Westminster will play at home for the final time of the 2010-11 season when they host Carroll College on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. That will be the final regular season appearance in the Behnken Field House for five Griffin seniors.
