Westminster Opens Invitational with 94-60 Win

Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The ninth-ranked Westminster College women's basketball team opened the Griffins Invitational with a 94-60 win over Holy Names on Thursday night in the Behnken Field House.

Westminster improves to 4-5 on the season and snaps a three-game losing streak.  Holy Names falls to 4-10 with the loss.

The Griffins shot 48.5% from the floor in the game and scored 38 points in the paint.  They grabbed a season-high 56 rebounds, including 17 on the offensive end that resulted in 20 points.  Westminster made eight threes and recorded 18 assists on 33 made field goals.

Dana Bates led four Griffins in double figures with 22 points on a 7-of-11 shooting night.  Bates finished the night with eight rebounds that all came on the offensive end.  She also had three steals and two assists. Jenteal Jackson added a season-high 17 points and was 3-for-5 from beyond the arc.  Jackson also had four assists and three steals.  Shelby Ellsworth had 10 points and 11 rebounds while Nicole Yazzie scored 10 points.

Westminster scored the first nine points of the game and then went on an 18-5 run after HNU scored six straight.  The lead would grow to 22 with just under four minutes left in the first half before the Griffins carried a 50-31 lead into the intermission.  The Griffins would then start the second half with a 15-4 run to build a 65-33 lead with 13 minutes to play.  The difference would not get within 29 the rest of the way.

The Griffins will wrap-up the Griffin Invitational on Saturday when they host Simpson University at 4 p.m.
